Dance to connect

When our favorite radio presenter, Patrik Hezucký, left this world at the end of last year, he left us with a final message: that everything is about connection, and that we should move toward it with intention.

Those words stayed with me. They helped me to understand why certain dance spaces make me feel whole and alive, while others leave me untouched. It has everything to do with whether dancers are willing to open themselves and meet one another beyond steps and shapes.

My path has woven through different worlds of movement. I grew up in hip-hop dance groups, and later wandered into contemporary dance and somatic practices, learning to listen to the body in quieter ways. Now, I draw from both realms, each offering its own gifts.

In some ways I have outgrown the street dance environment, yet from time to time I return for inspiration. The younger generations shine with skills and beauty, and this world still holds its place. But a culture built on comparison and competition can feel closed to those who are not already inside. I remember how, as a young dancer, we were taught to measure ourselves against others — as if difference were a threat.

Fortunately, that was more than two decades ago, and many things have shifted since. Some teachers now choose connection over comparison. Dance remains competitive, but it also carries immense joy, and that joy deserves to be nurtured. Mr. Kriss is someone who enters competitions and still dances with play, curiosity, and delight. His workshops invite people into connection — with each other, with the space around them, and with something larger than all of us. His way of dancing speaks deeply to my heart.

I always knew dance groups competed. What I didn’t know was that radio stations did too — not until Patrik Hezucký passed, and suddenly it became visible. And here we are, already in 2026, time to stop holding grudges between people and companies.

It feels like it is time to soften, to collaborate, to enjoy each other’s company more fully — to remember that we nourish one another simply by being together and present with each other.

What about you? When was the last time you felt connection in a dance environment?
