Dance is a social experience. It has always been and it is suppose to be. This idea has recently came on my mind.
As a dancer I have spent much time alone practicing or sharing my work. But the moments when I thrived the most were when I was witnessed by others in dance. And it could be a friend of mine behind the camera capturing my moves. Another friend of mine told me on one of our dance sessions: "You need audience". And it makes total sense. We need audience. We need to be witnessed by others. We are social beings. We can also be witnessed by the Universe. But we need to feel the connection.
In fact, when I think about it more thoroughly and think of many experiences when I've danced alone, for example in nature, I've felt that I am witnessed by the nature and the life itself. In these moments it feels like the life is supporting me and singing the same song, sometimes opening the sky in a grey day and letting more sun shine on me. It happens in moments when I am able to step out of my mind and create the connection within me, my true self and the surroundings. Then the magic can happen.
However, in my opinion, when witnessed by others the way to connect can be way faster, there is an immediate feedback, immediate mirror in the form of the other. And it also brings energy if you are in supportive and loving environment. We also grow faster when we are surrounded by a community of people with the same goal.
It was just a brief reflection on Wednesday evening.
What about you? When do you feel the most connected? Have you experienced the difference between dancing alone, for example on camera and in presence of the other? Let me know what your thougths are.
With Love,
Jindriska
